The Nuremberg Globe

5F

German mariner and geographer Martin Behaim produced his first terrestrial globe in 1492 in his hometown of Nuremberg, Germany, the very same year that Christopher Columbus set sail for the Americas. It is the oldest surviving terrestrial globe and depicts Europe, Africa, and Asia, but leaves large voids where the Americas and the Antarctic would later be discovered. A replica of Behaim’s globe is on display at the Evergreen Maritime Museum.
